Died on freeway

97 F-250 7.3 ZF-5.

I was hauling my 67 mustang on a uhaul trailer in Washington state. A part of I-90 crosses the Columbia River and then climbs up out of the gorge. I made that climb in 5th gear at 70 mph. It was like 95 degrees outside.

At the top, the engine just died. I pulled over and the dipstick was a bit low. I put 1.5 quarts of 5w30 in because that's all I had. I started it up and it ran REALLY rough, limped it into town (30 miles). The engine won't rev past like 2500, and it has very little torque under that. Once in town, I added two quarts of 10w40 (the gas station didn't have 15w40), and drove it around for 45 minutes. It never got better. The oil is half-way up the hash marks now after the 3.5 total quarts.

I think I overheated it up the hill, but I'm not sure. My temp gauge has always read low. The gauge was climbing a bit while I was pulling the hill, but it didn't get into alarming territory.

So far, it held 17 PSI on a coolant system pressure test. And the oil looks fine. I swapped the CPS- no change. No oil in the ICP plug. Unplugged the ICP and it got worse. The stamped nut on the IPR is still snug. I'm worried I blew my engine, so compression check is next.

Thanks
Matt

Ouch. Sorry to hear this but it should be an interesting diagnostic. I'd start with some low-hanging fruit.

Do you see signs of blow by to support the compression idea? Smoke?

Before I dug in for a compression check, I'd check the fuel filter for signs of oil, injector o-ring leak, IPR duty cycle. Check fuel pressure. Intake boots? And check the injector harness from the IDM plug. Less digging. One of these guys has a great link for the electrical test, probably in the FAQ, should be in the FAQ.

Here's one:

First thing to do is change the oil with correct diesel approved oil and weight, and oil filter. With all that oil you added if it didnt leak you might have bad injector O rings. Check fupe filter to see if its not black, this will tell you if you have bad o rings or not.

Another way to check for injector o-ring leak is to free rev the engine and watch the tail pipe for smoke. If it will free rev to around 2000rpm, then stumble and slowly clime to 3500 while pouring white smoke, this may indicate an injector o-ring has let go. Take a good look at the wiring/ plugs to the valve cover, both outside and under the valve covers, for melted connectors/burned pins, as the IDM can feel a short and shut one bank down to protect itself.

"Unplugged the ICP and it got worse"

I think this is telling us something.

Have a scanner?
Check %IPR duty cycle
Runs better when cold?
Maybe IPR orings went and or injector orings are leaking by ( remove VC and look for excessive oil shooting around injctor when hot)

Hey Matt! I live nearby you sorta (the dalles) anyways, I had something similar happen to the wife’s ford. But I believe it is the HPOP. I tried everything basically except a compression test on hers, but when I scanned it the hpop was only putting out 200psi cranking.

The point is I’ll let you know if it fixes it. And if your truck is still down I may be able to bring the scanner up to the tri cities area if my buddy lets me borrow it. Good luck. Let us know what comes to be!

he has the Bosch evolve 3. Really nice setup

That's quite the offer. I had the truck towed to my house in Port Orchard.

I own two ODB2 Bluetooth devices and of course I can't find either of them. I have Torque Pro on my phone, just missing the bluetooth device...

I'm leaning toward compression issues just because it died after being flogged up the hill. I don't think my luck is good enough to have an electrical issue with that kind of timing. I guess it could be the HPOP, though.

The UVCH on both sides are new. I replaced them a few weeks ago with the Napa brand parts.

I'm not getting smoke in any condition. Cold, hot, free rev, loaded. No smoke.

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know if I can find my stupid bluetooth adapters.

Ohhh okay. Well I thought you were closer then that to me. But I will be going to port Townsend soon. Sounds like you were a long ways from home!

Were you on 84 or 90 by like Umatilla?

let us know if you get it scanned!

Found my adapter. Still trying to get all the right PIDs. Can't seem to find the right one for coolant temp.

Key On:
IPR Duty Cycle: 14.7%
HPOP: 0 PSI
Coolant: -40 F ??
Injector PW: 0 microseconds

Cold, Idling:
IPR Duty Cycle: 24.7%
HPOP: 1301.9 PSI
Coolant: -40 F ??
Revs: 766 RPM
Injector PW: 1584 microseconds

Cold, Full Throttle, Neutral:
IPR Duty Cycle: 21.3%
HPOP: 1549.3 PSI
Coolant: -40 F ??
Revs: 1762
Injector PW: 1432 microseconds

Car Gauge Pro's Buzz Test doesn't get very far. It buzzes just one injector then says
P1291 - Powertrain. Injector High Side Short to GND or VBATT - Bank 1.

Just replaced these UVCH with the Napa brand parts. Hmm. Guess I'll take it off and check it with a multimeter.

That would make me think IPR orings, IPR or maybe injector o rings

Ohm out UVCH from IDM just in case running on one bank

No PID for coolant temp
There is Engine Oil Temp PID

I pulled that valve cover off and found that I had smashed one of the injector wires between the valve cover and the gasket. Upon close inspection, there was a rub-through spot in the smashed wire. There's my P1291 short to ground. I have pictures of it that I'll try uploading tonight.

I ordered a motorcraft valve cover gasket and I'll install it tonight. Hopefully that's all it takes!

Thanks everyone
Matt
