Hi, I just rebuilt my motor and I’m trying to start it for first time, it had a very large consistent backfire at first so I turned distributor 180 degrees and backfiring went away, and it was turning over good and now it’s hard for it to turn over, I suspect battery but who knows. Any help would be appreciated!

If the engine is backfiring, things aren't set right.
The cam must be properly timed with the camshaft using a degree wheel during assembly. Then the crankshaft is turned to top dead center as marked on the damper and aligned with the marker. Then the distributor is installed so that #1 terminal is where the rotor is pointing. Also the lifters, pushrods, rockers and valves must all be the right length and settings.
Update: I got it to start and stay running but a new problem has risen, it’s leaking a lot from the thermostat housing, I’m very positive that it’s correct. I put the thermostat on the housing, put the gasket over it, then bolted it on but it’s still leaking a lot
On the 300 it's easy to have the thermostat slip out of position when installing the thermostat housing. It will can pinch thermostat in the gasket surface area and if you tighten enough it will crack the housing.dont ask how I know that. Lol
Any I changed after that, I used a thin layer of RTV gasket maker to adhere gasket to housing holding thermostat in place. Let it set up for 10-15 minutes before installing.

I'm with you on the thermostat slipping down and getting pinched. Took me more than once to learn that lesson. LoL. The 302 is the same way, as well as a couple other FoMoCo products.
