Was doing a quick walk around on my truck before taking off on another leg of a trip when I noticed it looks like a bushing or seal is loose and not actually pressed into the axle tube. Is this normal or do I have a problem?
That is the dust shield that looks like that after 100 miles of putting a new one in. If you have the Dana 60, there is an updated seal for that location.
The new seal is really nice and works well. One piece spring steel with a chevron rubber insert that the axle slides through. Major disassembly to install though. The new seal runs about $30 from the local dealer but you end up having to replace the knuckle seal as well, $75 from Napa. Add in another $25 for a pair of Knipex snap ring pliers to get the monster snap ring off deep inside the hub and about $4 for a new hub o-ring. The knuckle seal installation tool is about $80 shipped from amazon unless you make your own but you need something to install it as its a tight fit even with a bit of grease helping you out driving it.....OR, drive like you always have as it really does nothing. I'd cut it off with a pair of dikes just so I didn't have to look at it. If you end up needing ball joints in the future that's when to replace it and don't let whoever does it, if it isn't you, put in the old style seal just because they are trying to get rid of old stock.
Actually, see you have an '01. No big snap ring involved and not sure on the knuckle seal but think it is still there, its what makes for an airtight seal if you have the ESOF hubs.
