Those who had wheel PVD chipping/peeling issues:

I know a lot of people have reported issues with PVD coming off around the edges of the stock PVD wheels, especially when tires are removed and remounted. I have a couple of questions for those of you who had this issue:

1) Was the issue cosmetic only, or did you have leaks around the beads?

and

2) Aside from simply buying new wheels, did anyone attempt a repair, like having their wheels recoated? If so, what was the result?

Thanks for your input.

My 2017 had this problem. About 12-13k miles they started.
Took about a month for ford to approve the replacements.
Just have all 4 replaced last week (15k miles on truck).
But I live in buffalo Ny so salt is a big problem.

my buddy has the same truck as me and his all did it also. 23k miles though. Ford replaced all of his last month.

I saw peeling on my wheels (and running boards) at 24K miles on the factory tires having never dismounted the tires. Ford replaced all 4 wheels and both running boards under warranty without asking questions, and I had them mount new tires at the same time. I doubt it would be worth refinishing the wheels. Get them replaced if you're within your 3/36.

Edit- cosmetic issues only but I didn't want it to become anything more. Plus I sliced my finger open badly on the peeling finish on my running boards while cleaning them once so I was already mad!

Thanks guys. I’m out of warrantee on them so I’m trying to figure out what to do if it comes up. I’ll need new tires soon so we will see if it happens to me. I just wanted to know what to expect.

Well see, just got my first new set of Chrome PVD rims this spring. I am at 51,000 km, I have extended warranty to 200,000. I did not try to repair or repost, having warranty. Even if you tried I doubt it would last. Yes it was mostly cosmetic and hard to notice once the tires were changed, but it was noticeable.

I have a 2016 XLT with the same issue. Had 37.000 mile on it and still under 3 year warranty. Ford said they would replace them for $1300 less $3500. I told them to stick it!. I can buy a set of new wheels from tire rack for under $1000 and have a better warranty. Terrible quality from Ford. There's a lot out there that have this problem. Also I had the center caps replaced under warranty 3 times with the same chrome issues. Ford should stand up for their defects. Will be talking to legal. Maybe a class action lawsuit will change their quality attention.

Happened to me when I bought new tires at my Ford dealer. The service tech really chipped the edges bad when he changed the tires. My 2017 was out of warranty and I pitched a bitch to the service manager, they offered me new OEM $1400.00 chrome wheels (not PVD) at their cost $300.00 for 4, I took the deal. Still pissed me off that I had to pay anything. I can't believe Ford uses these sorry PVD wheels.
