I had the front of my truck on jack stands this weekend and noticed there’s some up and down play in both front axles. If I grab the u-joint I see some movement where the axle comes out of axle tube near dust shield and where it goes to hub assembly. What I want to know is if some movement is normal? 1/8” inch maybe. Called dealer and they told me they have some play even new ones. Seems dumb that they would have play. But maybe I’m missing something. I Wanna hear from you guys. The truck makes no strange noises and 4x4 works fine.
I replaced a tie rod end on my truck recently and noticed some play in those axles and failing dust boots. Going to take it to the dealer and let them look at it before my Powertrain warranty is up in September.

Dust boots is normal to fail. Happens all the time.
That play is normal. The axle shaft is only supported in the differential and in the wheel hub assembly. The rest just floats. You will have some play.
Dealer will replace all of my dust shields under warranty with an upgraded version. They will check play in axles but told me a little play is normal. We’ll see tomorrow.
Thanks for your input guys. I’ll keep an eye on them and maybe tomorrow I will go to dealership and see how much play the newer trucks axles have. I wish I had known about the dust shields being covered under warranty I would have gotten mine done a couple years ago.

Good to know!!! Quite a bit of work for just those dust shields....
Update. All plastic dust shields replaced with newer dust shields. If anyone still has Powertrain warranty and has dust shields falling out go to a ford dealer and get them replaced. Didn’t cost anything. I also checked play in front axles on some new trucks. They have play like mine.
Ford puts them there for a reason. I’m in mud a lot and plow during winter. So according to you I should have left the old pieces of crap in there and just ignored it even though it didn’t cost me a penny to get new ones? Don’t understand your logic?

Because the new ones will also break in no time. You going to keep getting them replaced?
