RV TPMS System

I have the ultimate tow package installed and I was wondering if anybody has installed the Ford TPMS system. I am NOT interested in installing the camera. Is it possible to get the sensors installed in the tires along with the booster only?

I don't see why you couldn't do that. The cable has a split off for the camera.

You can always lay out the cable and receiver on the ground and see it if complains without having the camera part installed.

Yes it is possible. I ordered the TPMS only kit. It comes with 4 TPMS sensors, the new outlet on your truck, and the wire harness for your trailer. I took the camera portion of the wiring harness and just zip tied it up out of the way on my trailer.

Confused, aren't the TPMS for the trailer wireless? Wouldn't you just have to install the sensors and have the truck learn the sensors?

Yes, they're wireless, but wireless to their own receiver box, which is then wired to the truck via a replacement plug on the bumper (that's shared with the camera).

I've really gotten NO information on this system and think it is a bunch of CRAP that we pay all this money for something and only get half the parts..
I was going to buy the sensors and put them in and have my truck learn them because that is what the dealer told me I needed, I was mad because it didn't come with the sensors in the first place. Now I'm PISSED that it didn't cone with the sensors, a receiver and some other crap.. What in the HELL did I pay for, the ability to buy more stuff?

There are wireless systems out there that screw on to your valve stems, they take 5min to install and cost less than Ford OEM

Is the stupid camera plug and cable required for the receiver box? I wasn't really interested in mounting anything on my Airstream. I was hoping the TPMS booster for the sensors would mount on the truck.

Yes the cable is required. If it wasn't for the camera cable (that I do have a camera installed with) you wouldn't know I have the TPMS. The cable for that is fairly unobtrusive. I have it routed underneath my trailer.

Yep, the cable is required. The camera and the receiver Y into a single cable that then plugs into the truck. You don't have to plug both into the Y, but you need Receiver -> Y -> Bumper plug -> Truck.

That said, if your airstream is short enough, you 'might' be able to mount the receiver, and all the relevant cables, under the truck near the hitch and hope the wheels are within range. I don't know for sure what the range is, I have everything installed on my fiver (and I love having that camera!).

You can always go aftermarket of course, but then you lose the seamless integration into Ford's systems. I'd much rather have a cable to plug in, to give me a clean dash.

I believe the Ford TPMS system is an inside the tire sending unit (just like what is on truck). Note that it may not work with some trailer tires. I opted to go wit a 3rd party TPMS for the trailer - so many more options and much better functionality - pressure & temperature, screw on or flow through sending units, use on multiple trailers, etc.

EEZ tpms works well, simply screw on valve stem, you do get another screen but ... effective

Nichols manufacturing and welding makes a TPMS kit that is just the TPMS system no camera, not sure how they compare price wise. Been looking at it awhile seems like a nice system.

I bought the kit with my 2018 F350. Found out in the instructions that the pressure sensors will not work with steel belted tires, which my RV came with. So now it’s sitting in the box until I wear out and replace my trailer tires. I plan to hook up the camera, but running the cable is a pain. If you don’t mind a separate screen, go aftermarket. There are some TPMS systems that work with your phone. Saw something recently in Trailer Life .

I think it was a $700 option. Really wanted everything to be integrated with the truck. Wish the camera was wireless. Now I can’t use the TPMS. Probably would not have bought the package. Tried to research beforehand, but info was limited. You also need a way to suspend the cable from the RV to the truck to allow for turning slack. There are kits available to replace your Fifth Wheel plug with a combo. But snaking the cable through the hitch on my fifth wheel is not an easy job.

As others have mentioned, the receiver for the TPMS could probably go on your truck. But it needs to be plugged into the special trailer plug on the truck to work.

Good luck with your decision.

Mark
