I ran a live scan today after having noticeable loss of power in 5th gear. I had noticed a little power loss previously, but today was more pronounced. At wot, I averaged 2000psi and hit as high as 65% ipr. I have a TS 6 position tuner and run it on the 75+ setting. I also replaced the turbo with a Garret GTP38R at the end of last year. Previously I could go uphill in 5th gear doing 40-45mph and pick up speed no problem. Today going 40mpg on flat ground in 5th gear and putting the gas pedal to the floor, all I got was billowing clouds of black smoke and took a very lengthy distance to pick up any speed or feel the boost from the turbo. I do not have a boost gauge installed. I've done some research, which suggests the HPOP or injector seals, but none of the posts I read experience the exact same symptoms. I also found a p1211 code when I did the live scan, but no CEL lights were on the dash. I just hit 150,000 miles. Any more input is greatly appreciated!
I have purchased a new IPR from Motorcraft and probably will have to wait for the weekend to put it in. Are there any other parts I would need to replace in order to get to the IPR, like seals or gaskets on the HPOP or fuel bowl?
Depends on how you want to replace the IPR. It is under the HPOP which is under the fuel bowl. I have read of people replacing it with everything in place but I have not done it.
If you remove the fuel bowl you will need the 4 Parker sleeves (5/16", 3/8", and two 1/4") for the fuel line connections to the bowl at a minimum (https://www.dieselorings.com/1999-20...owl-parts.html). He also has a fuel bowl re-seal kit that you might consider if you take the bowl out.
If you take the HPOP out I wouldn't do anything to it unless you have an indication of it leaking, but that's just me.
As for IPR% and ICP, you should be seeing much lower IPR% and higher ICP pressure. IIRC anything over 40-45% IPR is probably an issue. It is hard to give you an estimate as you have a tuner and each tuner controls things differently. For my Gearhead tunes I would max out at ~40% IPR and ~3000 psi ICP and my PHP tunes would max out at ~40% IRP and 3500 psi ICP.
I just finished replacing the IPR with a new Motorcraft one and ran another live scan with the results about the same as before. I did hit 2200psi on ICP this time but also still hit as high as 64% duty cycle. The only time I would go over 2200psi was after I let off the gas pedal and then it spiked to 3300psi and of course wound down immediately after that. I am still showing the P1211 code as well, even after I clear it. What else do I need to look into now, ICP sensor, Injectors, HPOP? All the injectors show no fault on the live scan.
The 64% is indicative of the IPR working correctly trying to bring up ICP. The 2200 psi shows an issue on the HPO side, possibly a tired HPOP.
Your best bet to get some true data is to pull the chip first. Anyone's first recommendation when troubleshooting will be to pull the chip then see what the data is on the stock tune. Depending on what tuner you are running someone else might be able to speak to the numbers you are seeing but most of the data gurus 'round here can easily speak stock tuning.
