F350 4x4 components .

I've known if you ordered a f350 back in the 60s they were sent out to have to a third party to have the 4x4 components In stalled. I was wondering as I would like to stick a 4x4 set up under my 64 f350 what's years would most likely be compatible ? I've looked through a few junk yards but all I find are 2 wheel drives have not seen a 4x4 yet thanks

I fear you would look in yards a long time without success. Either Napco or Marmon-Herrington would have been the most likely F-350 conversion companies. I’ve not seen any Coleman or Fabco conversions from the 1960s that I recall. Within the past year there was a CL listing for a 1960s M-H F-350 drive train. While not my era I was tempted to grab them “just because”. Guess I should have.

You've not said how original you want the truck to remain. The 6 lug x 7.25” wheel bolt pattern will be your biggest hurdle in my eyes. If that isn’t important to you a donor F-250 4x4 of the 1960s or early 1970s should I believe have leaf springs, a straight axle, divorced transfer case, and I’d guess compatible steering geometry. But these era trucks might have unique unseen obstacles I’m unaware of so will defer to others on this. Stu

Here's one of the more impressive F350 4x4s I've seen on the forum. A conversion but looks like it was really well done. 6 lug front wheels and Warn brand hubs, too.

I would like to keep it as original as possible. There was a 57 4x4 f350 in Manitoba that they are going to keep the body and mount on another frame. I was more wondering what years would fit underneath I've heard the bolt pattern was still used after 66 but did the suspension design change ?

Yes, 1965 F100/250 4x4, 1966 F250 4x4 and 1964/66 F350 all used a "slipper" design front spring where the front is not a moving shackle but the longest leaves pass through the bracket on top of a roller. As the suspension shortens and lengthens during movement the longest leaves "slip" through the bracket.

The 1967 and newer F250 4x4 trucks used a pivoting rear shackle so the spring setup is different. 1966 and newer F100 4x4 used coil spring front suspension.

I'd think probably just use your springs and bolt the live front axle to them.

The 6 x 7.25” pattern was used by Ford through 1966 but through 1968 by Dodge and IHC. You might be able to broaden your yard searches to include those others as donors. Stu
