First thing to check on an AOD vehicle that won't shift into OD is the TV Cable grommet, and then the TV Cable adjustment. "TV" stands for Throttle Valve".
Movement of the Throttle (you!) causes a corresponding change in the TV Cable, which goes down to the trans. Get more on the gas, and the TV cable moves more and signals the TV Valve in the trans to increase the control pressure. This does two things:
It increases the trans shift points, the 1-2, 2-3, & 3-4 shift points all go up in speed roughly proportional to throttle opening, to hold each gear longer for better acceleration.
It also increases the pressure used to squeeze the respective clutches together in the shift. This prevents excessive slipping.
Why don't they have it high all the time for tight shifts? Because it would bang from gear to gear under lighter throttle.
That TV Cable grommet can age and fall apart, messing up the TV Cable's effective length. Really should look at a manual to do anything with a TV Cable. Wrong adjustment, or driving it with the TV Cable disconnected due to a grommet that destructed can/will cause major trans damage due to slipping clutches. The number 1 source of AOD trans problems is TV Cable related.
Have fun with your new toy
