I picked up my 2018 today after the dealer put on a new Ranch King bumper. First thing I did was test the adaptive cruise. It works fine.
Back home, I took a closer peek at how they integrate the FLR. I wonder if it's going to hold up well given the caliche stones tossed up on Central Texas roads. I don't tailgate, but a stone can always come from a long ways, or the other side. It seems like a small stone could go thru the grill and strike the transparent plate, which seems to be glass. Hopefully it's impact resistant.
Here are some pics, what do y'all think? Am I right in being a bit worried? The bottom pic is the stock protection Ford had, thick black plastic.
This is the perforated metal grill down low on the Ranch King. You can see the glass plate behind it.
Here is a side view of the glass plate. Looks like I'll need to clean in there if I hit serious mud.
The stock Ford cover, apparently transparent to radar. Maybe I'll affix this in front of the glass plate.
Adaptive cruise is only available on KR trim or higher. Or that was in the case when I ordered my 2017 KR. So not every SD has it. But the penetration of higher-zoot models surprised even Ford's marketers. I heard that it's over 50% high trim models nationwide. Texas might be higher.

Sorry for not being clear.. I was referring to the higher trim levels indeed. But yea, we love our trucks here lol
I only mentioned the shatter proof acrylic because that was my plan for when I go from my ranch hand brush guard to full bumper replacement. 2017 KR here
RenoHuskerDu, I would put that plastic cover on. I don't understand how the radar can work with a metal screen in front of it.
Well it does work. As soon as I left the dealer, I tried it out. As for the plastic cover, it snapped into slots on the stock bumper. I could surely rig up a way to install it in front of the glass, but that would mean the radar would have to pass thru 3 obstacles instead of one. So at that point, I reckon it might have some trouble.
I didn't know there was a Lariat Ultimate. Texas? Some states have their own models. Mine's an Ultimate, which was supposedly the top of the line in 2018. The salesman said there were no more options to sell me.

I called Ranch Hand, they're here in TX, and asked what that clear plate is. It's a polycarbonate thang, and they haven't had one break yet. It also keeps the radar from focusing on the expanded metal grill. Neat.

Heck yea, sounds like it’s the right material. Thank you for sharing the information!

So the sensors WILL work behind metal? From what I've been reading, they wouldn't even work behind a chrome-plated grill. I'm getting a new Fab Fours bumper, and I would have to think there is SOME way to relocate that sensor so that the ACC will keep working. After seeing yours, I'm wondering if I can buy only the relocation kit from Ranch Hand that you got & relocate it behind my Platinum grill. Thoughts, anyone?
It gets pretty complicated pretty quickly keeping that sucker working. Scroll back up this thread for the story of the guy who put on the wrong Toyota badge even though it looked the same. Frankly I would just go with ranch hand that way you know it's going to work
My normal cruise will not work if the sensor is blocked. I don't use the adaptive cruise anymore. If I don't pay attention I'll be going way slower than it's set at (behind another vehicle). It's just crazy when crap is covering the sensor then the normal cruise doesn't work either. You're lucky that it still works with the upgraded bumper.
I've read that you can turn off the adaptive cruise and the normal cruise will continue to work. I can't remember now if you turn it off in the settings on the dash, or in Forscan.
Even with mine shut off in the settings, if the sensor is blocked it won't work on normal cruise control. Snow blocks it and the warning comes up that adaptive cruise and front accident warning (something like than) inactive. This is a case where the vehicle is too smart and is a crap design to not allow cc if the adaptive fails.
I ran this same setup for several years and never had a problem. The clear cover is strong enough to handle anything that might hit it. Drive without worry.
