Brake booster hose

Hi, I am trying to hook up the brake booster hose on a 1979 F150. The engine that I installed is a 351 windsor from a 1974 torino. I tried a vacuum port from the carb, it did not have enough vacuum. I would like to use a port in the stock manifold. I am not sure if they are water ports or vacuum ports? Also there are two ports in the back of the engine facing the firewall that I plugged that were for the thermactor. Can I use one of these ports? Thanka.

If you used the 3/8 hose off the carb or carb spacer it will have as much vaccum as anyplace else. there are only 2 vacuum sources on any engine, manifold and ported. and ported is only a small fitting for the vaccum advance.

The 'thermactor' ports lead to drilled passages above each exhaust valve.

I concur with 440...if you used 3/8" hose off the large nipple on the carb, that's all the vacuum you're going to get. Doesn't really matter where else you tap it from. If you don't have enough vacuum to activate the booster (which if I recall correctly is around 10"), then you have a very radical cam in your engine or have an engine that is very badly out of tune and likely has a large vacuum leak.

I am pulling around 10 on the vac gauge and my brakes suck. The pedal is hard and won't stop worth anything, won't lock up.So I tried a reserve vac can inline with the booster, now I can get get the brakes to screech at 50-60 with the pedal now and thats not a panic stop.Just good pressure on the pedal,I feel way better about my brakes now.Vac gauge reads the same,it just has more of it.

that's not much vaccum. do you have a performance cam? if not I'd be checking for vacuum leaks and ignition timing.
