I am going to order a whole factory style exhaust system for my 1960 Ford F-100 with a short bed. My current system is all 1960 original and is missing everything from the muffler back. I am curious as to the tailpipe. My books are showing the tailpipe is 23.62" long, however that would only take the pipe to the axle, not all the way to the rear hanger. Is there a piece of pipe not listed in any of my catalogs which I will need?
Yes, I bought mine and got the piece from the manifold, then the muffler. I didn't bother to do the rest, as the exhust shop did the rest of the bending. You'll really like the sound! The muffler is non-chambered one(round) and you can see straight thorugh! It's puts off a deep tone at idel and a awsome growl at WOT. I also went stainless with no welds. The factory setup has a pipe coming fromthe manifold to the muffler, then a "hump" pipe over the axel that runs out to the end of the bumper.-4speed
So I do need to purchase or have made a pipe which goes over the axle? Just to clear things up, the assembly should be as follows: crossover pipe, manifolds, manifold to muffler pipe, muffler, axle hump pipe (not listed/sold in any of my catalogs), then the short tailpipe for a total of 4 pipes and a muffler? Do you know of anyone who carries the pre-bent axle hump pipe which ties the muffler and tailpipe together? Furthermore, was everything clamped together from the factory? What is left of mine seems to be 100% all original, with clamps and looks like it exits to the passenger side right after the wheel. Is this indeed correct?
My sixty shop manual, shows the exhaust coming straight out the back. In the pic they show, it looks like the hump and rear tailpipe are one piece. You might try mac's for that section. I just had a local muffler shop bend mine up and I probably saved a few bucks. -4speed
I'll do some calling around. What really concerned me was the listing stating it is 23" long, which would come really short of the rear bumper. I'll probably go the same route as you, having an exhaust shop bend the rear pipe for me. What about the clamps? If mine is indeed original (which it appears to be), it has clamps. Do any of your diaghrams/information show clamps from the factory or welds?
They clamped it. The original muffler and inlet pipe were one piece(when new muffler time came, a whole new pipe had to be ordered although the replacement part was two pieces)! Then they clamped the tailpipe on to the back of the muffler. -4speed
Hmm, that must mean my muffler was replaced at one time. I have the round style muffler, however there are two clamps (one a little different than the other) on the front. Everything from the rear of the muffler on was taken off. If you have any pictures or can provide a photo of exactly how much of the tailpipe is supposed to extened beyond, or come short of, the bumper, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, another question regarding the 1960 F-100. Did any of the F-100 models come from the factory with door mounted dome light switches? Mine has a set, which I think my great grandfather installed.
The pic(which I might scan) shows the pipe and chassis without a body. Make sure you lower the pipe because the original pipe after the axle had no other bends to tuck under the rear bumper(so the pipe was straight all the way back). I'm pretty sure there were no "factory" dome light switches in the doors. I'll look it up though. -4speed
