Stub Shaft

Does anyone have a part number or know where a guy can get just a stub shaft alone without having to buy the the complete assembly with both shafts, seals and a joint?

The axle shafts in our trucks have very large 1550 series u joints that allow a lot of steering and fit in the 2005+ Dana 60 steer axles. I crawl rocks and break parts for fun... :P

Thanks in advance-

Any junkyard that does wreck recoveries might sell you just the shaft. Be sure you, uhhh... don't get shafted.

I didn't come and post looking for common easily found parts, I know better than that. You won't find a chromoly stub shaft for a Dana 60 that takes a 1550 u joint, they don't exist yet. The factory shafts handle a ton of abuse and are serviceable before either the aftermarket wakes up or before we are forced to sped 3.5-4K on one of three solutions currently out there.

I'm just looking to see if anyone happened to work at a dealer or knows something as I can find the inners and outers but we only break the outers, so it would be advantageous to just get the outers.

Thanks

Thanks, but those are for the Super 60 which are longer.

The regular D60 stub is 7.03" and the Super 60 stub is 7.5" in length.

That is the correct stub shaft for the 450 and up.

Spicer doesnt offer the narrow track stub shaft separately.

Uses the spl70x joint. Aka 1550.

have you called anyone like east coast gear supply or randys or nitro gear to see what they say about it? if there is no aftermarket shafts like you say, its probly because nobody would bother using a 2x stronger shaft and not bother ditching the unit bearings as well. just a guess. if you get rid of the unit bearings maybe you can find the shafts you need?

The unit bearing design is fine and now prefered due to service and how far less moving parts are involved.

There are solutions out there, they are just mild to wild. Either you spend $150 on a factory inner and outer (which is still an excellent deal) or you spend $3500 on stuff like this.

...or $4500 on this and end up with even less steering angle than the kit above.

One of my contacts was able to get ahold of some folks at Dana and got the ball rolling to get that stub offered as a single unit, but only time will tell how long that will take. I wouldn't mind paying $250 a pop for a 4340 stub shaft as it is obviously the weak point being so short. The thing is when the stubs break it doesn't even kick the moon clips out, it just shatters inside the unit bearing. This tells me that once we get an upgraded stub shaft we can go down the path of full circle snap rings on the joint and get even more life out of it.

ill just bow out of this thread because its making less and less sense to me. if the factory shafts break, why would someone buy more of them and expect a different result. ecgs has 4340 stubs for the unit bearing style listed. on their site

We aren't expecting a different result, there just isn't anything in between the stock replacements and the multi thousand dollar options. ECGS and everyone else besides who I've mentioned lists 4340 stubs for the 99-04' Superduty which runs a 1480 joint which we don't want to go back to.

You might have more help on Pirate4x4. FTE is far from a off-road oriented forum.

There's a thread dedicated to the '05-up Super Duty D60 in General 4x4 section.

Quite frankly, it's not worth it to buy just the stub for 85 bucks and deal with installing the u joint. It's not.

6 bolts and you slide out the broken half shaft assembly and slide in the new one. Idk why you would want to complicate a trail repair with a ujoint press.

It's been discussed on that forum in the 3000 page SD Dana 60 thread.

Yeah, there is some info in there but not much on 1550 stuff.

Yeah, well, I was just looking to see if anyone had any info as you never know what industry insiders lurk around. YMMV but swapping a joint to save $100 in under 5 minutes isn't that bad of a deal. I personally don't run this stuff on my front axle but some in my group do. The future are these 05+ D60's and the 16+ stuff is just a simple bonus in strength and steering angle. Is it silly trying to save $100 once or twice a trip, maybe. In one season that could very well be a sizable chunk towards that $3500 price tag on the good stuff.

I run an old school kingpin axle with RCV's.... for now.

Thanks for the discussion guys -
