DW is retiring June 7, and it looks like we will be leaving the so cal chapter for a less taxed chapter in Texas. but still need to go search out a home.
Probably somewhere between Waco and Houston, I want enough property to have a covered rv storage. And maybe in trees, so east of Waco and Houston towards the woods I hope.
You can join me Keith as ‘California Emeritus’ status with all the benefits, trappings, accoutrements, sway, raiment...(TX has more than IL).
Welcome to retirement!
You've got to know when to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away And know when to run You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done
I will be interested in your post-rapture to TX perspective on taxes. From a distance, it appeared to me that property taxes on real estate were very high in TX. But then, there might be exemptions that reduce the actual tax burden from the simple rate found online. Other taxes were low, so like most states, they get their share of flesh in one way or another.
Yes if your 65 and older you get a bunch of deductions from property taxes, but theirs is based on actual market value, ours is a percentage of appraised value. but if we lose prop 13, a very real probability, our property taxes will be higher. Couple of the houses we were looking at there, are about 2800/yr. we are at 1100 now. And if we lose prop 13 we are looking at about 8000
The prop 13 change on the 2020 ballot is for commercial property. Bad all around but your home won't change.
for now. But our wonderfull mayor is proposing taxing cars somehow now and other city taxes. They are talking about "Congestion" fees, setting boundrys, like around Downtown LA, and then charging drivers a fee to enter that area. Also charging Lyft and Uber riders a .67/ride tax.
