Headliner depth before damage

Howdy from Oregon where we kiss where the sun don't shine (on account of the incessant rain)
Strayhound (my van) is a 1998 E150 Club Chateau window van.
I'm looking to mount my venerable old CB radio centered on the ceiling as I did on my '81 E150. Is there some sort of membrane that I'd be screwing into ?
Or, am I better off using molly screws? Please advise.

Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid
Gus

The headliner for your year is nothing more than a foam sheet pressed into its shape---there's nothing strong enough in it that'll support a CB radio or similar device weighing that much. Its actual depth would be between 1/4" and 3/8" depending where you'd measure.

Above the headliner is the steel roof with no sort of structure between the left-to-right roof rail at the front and the B-Pillar support just behind the front seats. I'm assuming you don't have a raised fiberglass roof which would make mounting something screwed into the now-covered out-of-sight steel roof.

If your headliner is in real good shape you could possibly sandwich a stronger material (metal, wood) to give you a bigger footprint but I don't know if I'd trust it to last. A long piece screwed into the reinforcement right behind the seats and extended toward the front may be adequate. I did this to mount a tv in my van.

^^^ That's a good suggestion too---removing the headliner is relatively simple and doing so shows how the roof was originally constructed perhaps giving an idea how to add a more substantial radio mounting material between the metal roof and headliner.

Again the only real concern is NOT having any screws come in contact or go through the metal roof.

Thanks for your responses guys. I may mount this radio to the engine doghouse, or perhaps build a between the seats lockbox that I can mount the CB and mobile scanner into.
