sure it's possible ... I've seen a few advertise 1987 and up remote start up to 1 mile the ones I've seen run just under 300 bux but I was never really interested in it, Google is yer friend, I could post a couple links but since I don't have experience with their products I can't say which is better .... so just saying YES it is possible.
one thing I might add is that all the ones I have seen are for AT only not for Manual Tranny,
I guess you could rig up a Neutral Safety Switch for an MT and Bypass the Clutch switch IF you have a Manual Tranny and use the Set Emergency Brake Switch for additional Safety.
BUT you didn't state what Tranny you have in your OP
AutoZone used to sell a cheapo one for roughly a hundred bucks, probably not the best, but a buddy of mine had one for a couple years and it seemed to do the trick.
I'm sure places like Amazon and EBay are full of them. There's not much to em, they just flip relays that jump around the ignition switch.
You'd probably have to find one with a programmable delay or something to let the glows cycle
Don't really know how you'd solve the glow plug issue. Depending on the outside temp effects how long the glow plugs stay on. And then for the glow plugs to be effective you have to hit the starter right after the plugs shut off. Especially important if you live in snow climates like you said you do.
You also might consider plugging in your block heater and putting it on a timer. With 2 or 3 hours of block heater in the morning your truck could probably start without GPs. Then just wire the remote starter normally.
i have a viper remote start on my 02 diesel. you have to pay extra for the glow plug timer module. and unlike a gas unit that stops spinning the starter when the engine fires, the diesel unit spins the starter for a set time. my 02 is set for 6 seconds crank time, because in winter it takes about 6 seconds to cold start.
but if i use it on a hot engine the engine will start and the starter will still spin until it times out.
