Remote starter
First thing: You get what you pay for! Yes, you can get a remote start for around $75 if you look at WalMart, etc. Unfortunately, they are not of very high quality, usually have low-amp relays integrated in the module (read: can't be replaced), and aren't as well featured.
I installed AviStart 3300 systems in both cars (made by DEI, www.directed.com) and while they were not easy to install (took about 6 hours each), they are of outstanding quality. DEI makes add-on modules to override most OEM security systems, some of them just splice into wiring, others require that you "hide" a key under the dash with the module to do the job--not sure about the Ford. The units I have come with a separate relay bank for all major functions that uses standard "Bosch" style relays, so if one does go bad, it's a $5 fix.
One of the hardest things (IMO) is just figuring out which wires to tap into under the dash--if you have a good service manual with a wiring diagram, it will save mucho time. The kits typically don't come with vehicle specific instructions, but if you go to a local shop that installs them, or www.bulldogsecurity.com they can usually get a list of what wires to tap, and where they are on the vehicle.
I picked up both my systems on ebay for ~$120 each; not sure what full retail is, but I think it was around $250. If you take it to a shop to get it done, I think most installs will run around $200-250 for labor, at least in my area.
All that said, I love these things! Nothing beats getting into the car in the middle of January, and it's already nice and toasty inside (also love that auto climate control) or in July have the car cooled down.
Good Luck,
Jim
If this isn't the superduty...
The car has 3 ignition wires
A 2000 model DOES have a transponder in the key, you will have to bypass the passkey system.
It isn't an easy truck to start with, a lot of work. But if you need help, we're here.
