clutch throw

1993 f-150 6 cyl, 90,000 miles, extremely light duty treatment:
I have to press the clutch all the way down to get disengagement.
When I was in Reno, Nv, recently, at an altitude of around 6,000 feet, the clutch was nearly inoperable and I barely got home...but it worked again once I got nearer to sea level. I suppose the hydraulic fluid expanded a little at altitude...anyway, is there a way to adjust the clutch pedal throw? could this mean there is air in the line? I'm afraid to take in in and get the automatic line "oh you need a new clutch"...but if I do need service, any non rip off shops in the San Jose, Ca area?
thanks
stuart Horton

There is a clutch bleeder on your transmission. Just bleed your clutch to get rid of the air in your line.

Do you have any leakage at the slave valve ? Thats the weak link in the clutch setup . How many miles on your truck ? The clutch disc , pressure plate etc will go a long time under normal use , the slave valves seem to die in the 100K mile range .

Hi Stuart, there should be an adjusting nut on the shaft between the slave cyl and the throwout lever. I agree with Paul as possibly replcing the slave cyl as you have 90k on yer ride. You could try bleed and adjust first to see what you have.

Hi Stuart, I usually do my own work, so I can't make a good recommendation of a shop. as for the adjuster, it should be right by the throwout fork. Mine on my 60 F-350 is right over the rear bellhousing support. feel free to e-mail me if you would like.
