Just found this forum hanging out, on of all places, a jet boat board. Well, you gotta have a truck to pull the boat right!
I look forward to talking about 6.9s and 7.3s with you guys. I'm a 33 year old diesel mechanic and have worked on lots of Fords over the years. Right now I'm replacing a 6.9 in an '87 supercab that had an early ATS turbo on it. I have installed around 40 turbo kits on early Ford diesels (Hypermax and ATS mostly).
Guess I'll be the first to welcome you to the board. Glad to know you're a diesel mechanic. You'll should be able to help us get to know our engines and other systems in depth when you have the time to field questions. R.A.
Glad to have you here, Malcomb. I'm working on my first diesel and I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as time goes by. I'm sure I won't be the only one either.

How many miles are on your injection pump? Most idle problems are a result from a worn out pump. That is, if you don't have a simple fuel problem (air or a restriction).
my question is for member who call himself {spectramc}have you check out the web site blue-oval-diesel.com, we are a local ford diesel club.
we are base out of western wa, we are always looking new members,, I;m only member with stock 7.3 idi engine,, all rest of members have 95 and newer powerstroke,

Hey, my truck is an '86 F250 Lariat 4x4 with the ATS turbo running on the 6.9. I Love it, but recently it started having trouble starting, when left set for a day or two. I need to crank for about 10 seconds, then it runs rough for 3 seconds, then it runs fine from there on. Is my mechanical pump the prob? Where can I find an electric pump to put on that is the right pressure, etc? Once it's running, it makes tremendous power. The turbo is faster spooling up than my dad's '99 Powerstroke. Can anybody give me some clues? Thanks!
Could be your lift pump, but I would first look for leaks around the return line caps. If you look at these the wrong way the have a nasty habit of leaking. Might need a couple or so new orings. If no wetness is seen around the caps, then suspect the inlet to the injection pump. This is also a common area for leaks, there is an oring on the fitting inside the nose cone of the pump. Then check your pump.
To check the pump pull the scharder valve and check for proper pressure 4-6 psi, also check to good flow. I believe that it's 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of cranking. Also another old trick for testing a mechanical lift pump is to fill the output line of the pump with fuel. watch it, if it leaks down... replace the pump.
I run an electric pump that I picked up at Advance Auto. I don't have the part number handy right now, but if you go to my website and pull up my aux fuel tank page the information is there. I'm at work right now and can't pull up my website since it's not auth by the IT guys.
The cheapie pump that I'm running keeps up with the fuel system quite well. I have my injection pump maxed out and she never starves for fuel even while pulling steep grades with TT in tow. I think if I remember correctly the pump I have puts out 5-9 psi.
