Pat, If they say "Start Up", how long does it take to come on line? Do you start making power when the turbine starts or after it comes to full power? I assume you recover the heat in steam and steam turbine, Right!
Rod, these are pretty big units, so, for us to get to minimum load, at 70% load, it takes about 45 minutes. To open the breaker after the start signal, that's about 15-20 minutes, to get the turbine up to 3600 rpm. Breaker closes, we bring it up to 70% ( about 130 Mwatts), and then we hand off control of the units to SPP, the Southern Power Pool, that we are a part of. We are rated up to around 160MW for each unit. Takes us about an hour to shut them down, where they will go back on turning gear, which keeps the main shaft turning at 2-3 rpm, to keep it from bowing.

Man, that sounds like a lot of work.
I thought opening my pool today was tiring.
Geesh.
I guess I'll take a nap for ya Pat...….
Actually, the generator is separate from the intake. It has it's own intake and exhaust vents. The shaft passes through the intake, into the generator building. The starting and turning gear motors are on the other side of the generator.
Rod, No steam, our turbine is basically a big jet engine, that runs off of natural gas.
