So a build date of August 19, 1954 for a 54 model is very late. I do not think my 54 was built in August of 1953 and sat on the lot until December 1954.
19H for a 1954 would be August 1953.
If it was 19V = August 1954.
A thru M (skipping I) is the first year, N thru Z (skipping O) is the second year.
Boy that doesn’t seem right. Does that mean mine was built in May 1953? Dennis
Dennis's 54 was built at the Chester, PA plant on May 11, 1954 with the serial number 14164 as seen above on his data plate.
My 54 which was built at the Chester, PA plant on August 19 has a serial number of 16490 as seen above on the bill of sale my grandfather got when he bought the truck. So my truck was built 2326 trucks after Dennis's truck so it had to be built on August 19, 1954, not 1953. So what's up? Error on the punch key operator?
Letters A thru M (skipping I) are the first year of production, letters P thru Z (skipping O) are the 2nd year of production.
A 1954 sold in December 1954 would be a left-over, because the 1955's were in showrooms in September 1954.
I am still struggling with this. So, for 54 models, if they started in August of 1953 Aug is H, Sept is J, Oct is K, Nov is L, Dec is M. Then 54 trucks produced in 1954, Jan is N, Feb is P, Mar is Q, April is R, May is S, Jun is T and July is U.
So there is no V and there should be no E, but there is as Dennis's data plates says E. And you said mine should be a V.... ????
If 1954 production had continued into September, that is considered the second year of production.
So, Bill, so if you say my truck (19-H, August 19) was built in August 1953, how do you explain that my truck has a serial number that is 2326 higher than Dennis's (built in May, E) serial number?
And my grandfather bought it on December 22, 1954, as a left over, which was 17 months after it was built, if it was built as you said, in August 19. That is doubtful.
I did some figuring. May 11 1954 was a Tuesday, August 19 1954 was a Thursday. 73 days in between. Two holidays. That’s 32 3/4 trucks per day. Unless they had the whole week off for the 4th of July. Sound reasonable? Dennis

Sounds reasonable to me. But according to bill mine was made in August of 1953. But I think I remember reading that the 54 models were delayed due to the final testing of the new Yblock..... So they could have still been making 53 models with the old flathead.
