1988 F250 5L Needs fuel pump

So yesterday I bought gas, front tank was empty, only put 3 gal in rear, in a very small town, very small station, headed out down the road. Running on front tank, started coughing and sputtering, so switched to back tank, ran better. Thought I got bad gas, so stopped and got HEAT for the front tank. Didn't make much difference. I drove another 130 miles home mostly running off rear tank, ran fine, switched to front tank, would only run 25 or 6 seconds then start sputtering and coughing so back to rear. I notice also that the front tank gauge never showed to move off the past-full mark.
This weekend I'll get a chance to put a fuel pressure gauge on it when the front's coughing and I can tell if it's bad gas or bad pump. Maybe can tell if the back is filling the front, too.
I had a new front tank fuel pump pump on it in June 2016. Cost $245 P & L, seems OK, but should last more than three years ? Probably was a NAPA pump, that's all that's available locally, what's the warranty?
What are we doing nowadays for pumps that last ?
