I'm getting ready to install fishing rod racks on the inside of my bronc. What is the recommended fastener to use? I have the Berkley Twist-loc racks and they come with just wood screws. I was thinking well-nuts or nut rivets but I don't want any leaks or anything really sticking out of the roof. Has anyone done this before?
I can tell you that the figerglass across the center section of the top is only about 1/8" thick If you are looking at the top, the panel between the seams in the top is 1/8" thick except for two molded-in support ribs each about 1/3 of the way through the top. At the top sides, it is double walled from the seam down to the side window. Just info for making a decision about what to use to mount your accessories. You could drill through and drop carriage head bolts through from the outside. I'd fill the hole with some silcone sealer to keep moisture from seeping through between the bolt head and the hole. I have several pictures from a top customizing project done to a stock Bronco top that I haven't yet posted just because the top isn't quite finished yet. I'll send them if you want detailed pics of the stock top and its construction.
I bought a system from Cabelas that hangs across the interior.
You may want to look at those too.I know you already bought the
Berkley,but.
I don't know what type of rods or fishing you do,but check out my gallery for pix of my roof rack and front cooler/rod rack.I surf fish,
and on top is the only place they will fit, 10-12' rods.
Gonna start surf fishing IBSP and LBI.
I have an 8' and a 15'. I'll take a look at your pics and see if I can get some ideas. I was thinking of maybe something mounted from the tire rack and angled forward but I'm not sure how much the rod would whip around.
For rods that long I would stay away from a front mount(like my rod/cooler rack)or a rear mount.I only use my front when I get to the beach or when I get to Haterras(not many trees in the way down there). My roof rack is a Yakima.Shoot me an e-mail and we can talk about it, and the surf in Jersey. I.B.S.P. is where I do most of my fishing.
I'm trying to figure out how to hang rods on the inside of my Bronco, most are 7' long...any one done that?
I have a thule roof rack and a set of ski holders but its so high to get at them rather hang inside then don't have to worry about loosing them either.
I have a set of Berkeley's (6 rods) and I think I'll ty 3M 5200. It may or may not stick to the holders and roof, but it's worth a try before drilling holes in the top.
BTW, I know a guy online thay might have a Bronco roof or two for sale in the Pasadena area...

Which ski rack are you using? part number from Thule ?, How is attached? I've never been able to find one the fits easily on my 96 bronco. Funny, I just had my daughter try on her old ski boots this morning, I hate to say it but I can't wait for some snow in New England.

3M's doing fine, still in the tube. The weather has been so good I wandered off to a local lake for some fishing and camping. The rod holder project got put on the back burner....
just an update I have my rods mounted. Used two heavy duty picture hooks and tapped them into holes drilled the same hieght as the garment hook in the rear of the cap. Wall of cap is double thick with an air pocket (sweet).
Then I bough those garment rods from target for 20.00 each and mount the berkley twist and lock rod holder to them. So far so good, I try and get some pics.
I used the Thule gutter mount system with the "artificial gutter" kit for the mounting on the fiberglass roof. http://www.off-road.com/ford/bigbron...ack/index.html. This is a detailed installation feature on the Big Bronco site that I followed for my 96.
The 3 load bars allow me to carry a 17' canoe + 2 bikes at once.
