I worked at a Ford dealership in the body shop when these trucks were new. I also owned a Bronco for 20 years. I've had many of these apart over the years. The Bronco name plate is one piece for Bronco Custom & Bronco Ranger. XLT was a separate badge that went under the Bronco Ranger. To make a Bronco Ranger XLT. There was no "Ranger" only package for the Bronco.
Also you could get two paint on a Custom with the race track trim.
BRONCO RANGER with Race Track Mouldings. AFAIK, there was no such thing as a Bronco Ranger XLT, so it's possible that someone added the Bronco Ranger nameplate.
This Bronco is 41 years old, has probably had multiple owners...and you know how some people love to swap parts around.
I've never owned a Bronco, only driven one once, rented it from Hertz 12/91 while vacationing in CO
When I-70 suffered a white-out, I had to read the owners manual to figure out how the 4WD worked.
So now I am confused. How do you figure that there is no Bronco Ranger XLT? The page you have provided shows under group number 16720 both the Bronco Ranger and XLT badge. Secondly, Just because they list the racetrack molding with the Bronco Ranger, does that make it the configuration or does it not make it as an available configuration, just as with the listed XLT badges?

It's very difficult to explain to people that have no Ford parts experience...how to read a parts catalog.
What I see here are 3 different nameplates for 3 different models. Suggest you look at a 1978 Bronco sales brochure for further info.
A salesman's facts book would be better, but are hard to find because most were thrown away at the end of the model run.
The references that you have provided are for the upper body molding and for the racetrack. In reading the text, the racetrack package is available with the ranger and the xlt badges, but not the Custom. The bodyside upper is available with the custom, ranger and Xlt badges. As well as with a final print of 1988. No where does the listing even suggest that the ranger xlt must have racetrack, but it does in fact suggest there was a bronco ranger xlt.
Is it fair to say that you misspoke or this guy with no Ford parts experience was able to read the text of all parts included, instead of being mesmerized by the drawings? Judging from the sales brochure, the red one is a "Bronco Ranger XLT" / the green one is a Bronco Custom(as noted by the black painted bumpers and "Bronco Custom" cowl badges. Then again, in their parts catalogs Ford showed a 427 hood scoop emblem for the 1969 mustang. Ford did not install the 427 in the 1969 mustang. Your logic is flawed in the case of "there was no such thing as a Bronco Ranger XLT, so it's possible that someone added the Bronco Ranger nameplate." You are right in one respect....Ford Motor Company was the "someone" who added the Bronco Ranger nameplate.
BRONCO'S were either Bronco custom or Bronco Ranger XLT Period just like the sales brochure shows. The XLT badge is a separate name plate just like the Lariat badge on trucks. There was no Bronco Ranger. The reason the parts book shows it is because you had to add the XLT badge to it. 2 pieces to make Bronco Ranger XLT. I don't have a picture of this or I would show how Ford made it.
All Ford trucks in 77 to 79 did the same thing. F150 Custom or F150 Ranger then you added the XLT badge below or the Lariat Badge.
Some one has to have pictures to show this.
I owned a new 79 F150 Custom 4X4 for 14 months and a new 79 Bronco custom for 20 years. Plus many more 78/79 Broncos & Ford trucks. So I know a thing or two about these. Plus worked in a Ford dealer body shop for 5 years when these trucks were new. I was also a Ford parts man for a few years.
Also the green & white Bronco Custom has two tone paint with the full race track trim. Just like my Bronco Custom.
72GTS, I appreciate your tact in not suggesting that I am an idiot. Secondly, it goes to show that whether a person knows a lot or a little they are able to read beyond page one. I am not new to ford iron, having owned and maintained quite a few. I know you answered this but to clarify; the parts catalog shows the xlt emblem under the custom badge but not the ranger, it does not say there was a custom xlt and it does not say there was only a ranger correct? As a side note, it does not show the custom name plate with the racetrack but ford did produce both models in both trim configurations, as is witnessed through the sales brochure.
Back on topic: Redneck_davis has the beginnings of a very nice Bronco and I am eager to see the progress he makes with it. He’s never in danger of ridicule, only praise...no matter which direction he takes. We’re all here to give support, not ridicule.

That is just how they are placed in the parts book. Not how they are found on the truck. Yes Bronco Custom & Bronco Ranger Xlt only no other way.
