Ongoing Engine Transplant Q&A

Hello,

I have a 1968 Ford F250 that I blew the motor in a few years ago. I ripped the blown up motor out and have put the project off until recently as Ive found a good donor 390 out of a 1975ish Ford F350 along with its bell housing, Np 435 , and tail shaft extension plus some other goodies. I did measure the stroke with a dowel.

Ive unfortunately lost quite a few bolts over the last two years. My first question concerns the Flywheel to crankshaft mounting bolts. I bought a set of flywheel mounting bolts from O reillys. The threads are 7/16 20 and are just under an inch in length. They fit perfect. Now I found what I believe are four of the original mounting bolts.

The bolts I bought have a head size of 5/8 where the other ones I found have a head size of 3/4. Can I use the new bolts or is it dire to have the bolts with the 3/4 head?

What length bolt are the pressure plate to flywheel supposed to be? Does it have to be flanged? Do I need washers?

What are the torq specs for the flywheel to crankshaft and pressure plate to flywheel?

It also appears that inside the dizzy theres electronic ignition, no points. Did ford ditch points in the mid 70s or maybe it was just upgraded at some point.

The truck I got all this out of, the owner had bought a complete clutch kit and never used it. The flywheel on the clutch side is pretty rusty. Will it just rubb off once im driving it or does it need to be a fairly clean surface?

Thanks, Im sure theres more Ill be needing to ask.

B8AZ-6379-A .. Bolt-Flywheel to Crankshaft / 7/16" -20 x 15/16" long / Obsolete

1958/76 all FE engines with M/T
----------
DuraSpark electronic ignition introduced in 1974, but not all had it until 1976.

If it has DuraSpark, the module is probably located on the left fender inner apron, it's a rectangular box w/wires feeding from it.

But, there's more than one module, there's a colored plastic grommet above where the wires feed out. What color is the grommet?
----------
350329-S2 .. Bolt-Pressure Plate to Flywheel / 5/16" -18 x 13/16" long / Obsolete

1958/64 272/292/312 // 1958/76 all FE engines.

352/360 flywheel uses an 11" clutch with (6) 5/16" -18 pressure plate attaching holes on a 12 3/8" bolt circle.

390 flywheel uses an 11 1/2" clutch with (6) 5/16" -18 pressure plate attaching holes on a 12 7/8" bolt circle.

However, either one will work.

It would be nice if you can get it but it is not the end of the world.
The dist. is a trigger and points the spark to the right place.
The ICM on the fender is the brain and needs the trigger to work.
Most ICM have a blue plastic piece where the wires come out you can get one of them and wire it in.
or
If you have your old points dist. and it works you could use it and install a point elimination kit in it.

As for the rust on the flywheel it depends how rusty it is.
If some surface rust using a DA sander to get down to shiny metal will work then go for it but if it will be pitted from the rust then it needs to be turned / ground to remove the pitting.

Looks like a small cap DSII dist.
Like I said you can get the DSII box with the blue grommet and wire it to your truck or use your old points dist. even keeping the points but if I used the points dist. I would do a point elim kit.
Being the motor ran with that DSII dist. I would not mess with it, leave it right where it is and get the box and wire it in.

Thanks. So I need a ignition module for Duraspark II. This motor came out of a 1975ish F350 that was being scrapped.

This engine is going into a 68 f250. Does the module plug into the wiring harness?

Yes I would get one for the 75ish F350 and if they ask the color ask for the blue.
Now that plug you showed that may also have the temp & oil wires in it. You will need to trace all the wires to see where they go and the colors and when you need to wire it up post up the wire colors and where they go and I am sure someone can help.
You will also need to post the trucks wire colors and what they were for. If you don't know where they go just the colors may help.

Blue grommet module wasn't available until 1976.

1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A & B; D8VZ-12A199-A; D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module-Blue grommet (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.

1974/76 dizzy with D4PZ-12A112-A .. Stator aka Magnetic Pickup Coil (Motorcraft DU-1A). Stator takes the place of the points and condensor.

All 1974/79 V8 Passenger Cars, F100/350, Bronco & Econoline with DuraSpark except 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W with EEC (on board computer).

1977 and later dizzy has a larger cap with male ends. It snaps onto a lower plastic adapter.

Maybe not but seams to be the go to box that is used in most of the Ford products.
He is going to need to make a harness to tie this into the trucks wiring anyway.
