I drove the FX4 and Lariat yesterday. I liked the ride of the Lariat better than the FX4 but, I thought the interior and exterior of the FX4 and the looked much cooler. The dealer told me that the only suspension difference were the Rancho shocks on the FX4 and that if I changed them, I would have the same ride as the Lariat.
I'm not sure I believe him. The brochure discusses 3" wide leaf springs as well as the off-road shocks on the FX4.
Does anyone know of any other suspension differences between these two trucks? Or, any way to make the FX4 ride smoother?
I think your dealer might be right but I'm not 100% sure. I know that the lariat also has the 3" leaf springs. Tell him to switch it so you can try it before you decide. Your dealer works for you.
(are you comparing a 2wd lariat to a FX4, or are both vehicles 4wd? If both are 4wd, then the vehicles are similar in terms of driveability altho lariat would be tuned a little softer. If you are comparing a 2wd lariat to a 4wd FX4, then please read on) there is a whole lot more to a FX4 package than shocks in terms of driveability and performance. I'd judge the 2wd lariat versus the FX4 as they come from the factory and buy the one i liked best while Totally disregarding the salesman's "tip" about changing shocks.

f150 man, both trucks were Screws, 4x4 I did not check the tire sizes, but I would order the 18" wheels. I'm currently driving an early (manufactured 5/00) Screw Lariat with 81K on it. The shocks are original so maybe I'm just used to a mushy ride. I'm definetly getting a new F-150, I just want one that looks cool, FX4, and rides well, Lariat.
I'm not racing in Baja, just traversing three miles of hilly unplowed road in the winter along with hunting on the weekends. I can't imagine most people would buy a truck that stickers for 38K and use the skid plates, but that's just me.
PB23R, its either a Lariat or FX4. carbon fiber dash = FX4, wood = Lariat. color keyed bumpers = FX4, chrome = Lariat. Black gauges =FX4, tan= Lariat
eric_66218...maybe its a Canadian thing. (i live in Ontario) No wood trim in the cab, but has chrome bumpers. No tan gauges, just the black one etc etc. Seems to have bits and pieces of both.
My *only* criticism of the 03 Screw is that it sags a bit more than i expected when my 6x10 cargo trailer is loaded and hitched. I dont really want one of those add-a-leaf setups. Dont they just ruin the ride? And i have been told that they would lift the back even higher. Dunno, i saw a 2 1/2 inch front lift on another post. Maybe that and an add-a-leaf.
Paul, I can't answer that one. Maybe it is because you live in a "foreign country".
I wouldn't mess with the suspension. Especially the height on a 4X4, something to do with the angle of the driveshafts. I'm sure there are other people on this board more qualified to answer your question than me.
This is off subject but, I read in USA Today that cars and trucks sold for thousands less in Canada. I'm sure the money I saved would be well spent on a hunting/fishing trip while picking up my new rig. I considered checking that out but decided I couldn't handle the metric system dash.
Eric I'm not sure exactly how it works but i was told that a vehicle has to be registered in Canada for at least a year before it can get exported to the US.
Our dealership sends quite a few used trucks to the US through brokers and supposedly we get big bucks for them. Apparently somewhere along the line they convert the dash to MPH.
