Another steering thread
hey everyone, Didnt want to step on anyone elses posts about their steering problems..even though it seems we all have them!! So i am gearing up for my pilgrimage to disney from NY next week and was trying real hard to get this truck 2003 Ex 7.3 to drive and hold straight .Over past 2 years: x code front spring swap, steering pump, new cardone box all new lines, rancho steering stabilizer and a bunch more.. This week: wheel bearings, every tie rod and ends with moog, moog track bar, moog ball joints.
so i just picked it up from the alignment shop.. result shown above.. and is actually worse .. steering is very responsive with a touch a finger.. but to make the truck drive straight down a 40mph road i am constantly wobbling back a furth.. i asked the shop to get it to 5deg caster.. but with 4 deg start.. he felt it would not make enough difference for cost involved.. it also looks like my toe in is a little closer to the center of limits as well.. do you guys think i should have alignment go to 6 or 7 degrees caster? I have a short local trip planned with camper this weekend.. go to try it as is.. shop said come back after driving a little..
you want +.03 to .06* which is Toe In
- is toe out + is toe in
after you get your toe in corrected drive it, wander should be gone.
if not then the next culprit is your ball joints, if the same shop that can’t seem to get your alignment correct installed them then I suspect they did not torque the ball joints correctly. This WILL cause wander.
get that all squared away and if you want more then 4* of caster you can use a 2* shim how ever with everything else correct then 4* should be sufficient.
Only use this when your current wander is fixed other wise you are not tuning you are putting a bandaid on a problem.
