I have a 96 Explorer with a 302 (5.0L) with 98K miles. It has been an excellent vehicle and has never been in the shop. The check engine lite has been on for seven years, since the vehicle was 6 months old. It runs like a top and passes tailpipe tests with flying colors. My question is: What is the best way to disable the check engine lite? It is obviously not going to burn out, and I'm tired of looking at it after seven years! Love your forum! Thanks for any suggestions.
Thanks for the comments. Yes, I've used tape to cover it up. Yes it idles smooth and gets 17mpg. When I said it's never been in the shop, I mean it has never malfunctioned! You put the key in and it starts up and runs great! Never failed to do that in seven years! Of course I have done routine maintance. (fluid and filter changes, plugs @ 50K miles, tires, and battery changed out once). The lite comes right back on as soon as you reconnect the battery and restart the vehicle. I've had the codes read three or four times and everybody gives me a different story on what caused the lite and what would be involved to make it go out! I realize I can take the instrument panel out and attack it from the front. However, I've done a little interior work where removal of trim was required and it was not fun....when it was time to put everything back together. Does anyone know if I can disable the lite by clipping a wire in the back(and if so ...what wire?) or does the I/P use LED illumination? Thanks for the assistance.
