hey, i have a 352 in my 67 with an edel preformer intake and edel. 600cfm 4bbl. It's got a 4 inch open air cleaner, dual breathers with no PCV, pertronix ignitor, new stock ignition coil and duals running through turbo's, mated to a 3 on the floor. It's been running rough lately and really stumbled in third at lower speeds, and won't accelerate in third below about 2000(45mph) and if you try and accelerate at anything less it makes a horrible on/off lurching and horrible noises. accelerating off of 1000rpm in third is horrible, and can't be done unless you have a mile to accelerate ever so creepingly smoothly. It also just generally runs rough, at all speeds and has a tough time mating the clutch and flywheel smoothly. The timing is about 12-14 degrees BTDC. It doesn't ping and will accelerate like crazy in first and secong and third over 2000. It seems smoothest at 2500-4000rpm. I'm pretty stumped on this one but it doesn't seem to be an ignition problem to me, but i need some help. All help and idea's appreciated, post any questions here.
You may have a vacuum leak or your distributor is getting old and wearing out. They are pretty cheap at autozone. $30 I think. Unplug the vacuum advance and hook up the timing light. Bring the engine slowly up to 2,500rpm. Take note as to when the timing starts to advance. Hook your vacuum back up and check it again. Your choke may be sticking, floats may be set too high, etc... Check for smoke when accelerating at low rpms in third. Just some ideas.
Have you checked the timing since it started to run poorly? Does it run strong at higher RPM's? I would hook up your PCV valve, it keeps your engine cleaner on the inside.
Check your timing at several RPM's and also see what happens without the vac adv hooked up. It sounds similar to a problem I had. The 352 has originally a nylon cam gear, if it wears out the nylon falls off and there is a lot of slop in the timing. Try turning the crank by hand while watching the dist rotor. If it takes a lot of crank movement before the rotor turns, that's the problem.
This may not be the problem but I've had problems with the Pertronix electronic ignitions. I finally just spent the few extra bucks on a mallory unit and have had no problems since.
I had the opposite problem! Mallory went bad, installed Pertronix and no problems since. I had the Unilite setup, I'm not familiar with any other Mallory systems, so can't say one way or the other.
