i just bought a (new) 88 f-150 reg cab-longbed w/302 4/speed m.
it has about 129000 and 50000 on rebuild engine new clutch, tranny and brakes gone through.
anyway.
when i pick up truck i noticed speed needal was stuck down on plastic trim so i picked it up and put a tiny screw under.
now speedo works but very eratic, i figure cables maybe dirty becuse od works fine.
weird part. when moving down road push in clutch, speedo goes down to 0. if in gear works.
other than getting ready to put to tanks and pumps in i don't think i did bad for $700
thanks for in put
Sounds like the cable end at the tranny is where the problem is. You have a speed sensor located where the cable attaches to the tranny.
Unplug the wiring and disconnect the speedo cable. The sensor is mounted with one bolt. Remove it and inspect the gears. You may need to replace the sensor.
