Trade a 2017 F350 6.7 lariat value with are z series topper with 17800 miles. Trade allowance $53000
buying 2019 F350 Platinum msrp $81235. Sales price with all discounts and $3000 pco $69235. After tax tag Ext $18500 out the door. Trade is paid off.
Sounds great to me. $53K on that trade seems amazing. How much does a dealership need to make on a trade-in? With all of the transactional costs and "inventory readiness," I'm guessing that it needs to be at least 20%. That means the dealer should be expecting to sell that for ~$63K. Let's round down to $60K. Then, they'll probably list that for $63-65. I just bought my brand new Lariat Ultimate for $66K.
The numbers just don't make any sense to me. Used price is so high that I couldn't imagine not buying new.

It sounds like a very good deal
Just last September I traded in my 2017 F350 Lariat Value Diesel with 19,996 miles. They gave me $54,202. Ordered a $74,014 MSRP 2019 F350 Lariat W/Ultimate pkg. Sale price (X-plan minus $3k PCO, $250 USAA Cash and $500 Ford Cash) was $65,878. After 6% tax, tag, title and $100 dealer fee minus trade in value it was $12,700 out the door. If I had financed with Ford there would have been another $500 rebate.
Since then the 2019 MSRP only went up $100 ($1,595 vs $1,495 Destination fee) rebates are a little better now ($1,250 vs $500) but trade in values have gone down.
Btw, they marked up my trade only $3,000 and listed it for $57,211. It’s a one fixed price dealership plus $799 dealer fee. It had a small puncture wound above the right tail light where I backed into my trailer’s pin box. You can just see the puncture in the listing where I circled it. It was sold within a week.
