99 axle question
Could anyone explain to me the difference between the different axles you can get on the expy. Unfortunately, I found out the I have the 3.53 axle on my 99 EB 5.4L 4x4. I have read some threads about axles, but was wondering for clarification. I thnik I read that the 3.73 is better for towing. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Ford never offered a 3.53 on the Expedition. I'm assuming that you have a 3.55. Essentially, a lower-geared rear axle (numerically higher) allows the engine to run at a higher RPM for a given vehicle speed. Usually, this means that the engine is now running at a speed that provides more torque, or pulling power, thus making towing heavy loads easier. That's the upside. The downside is that because lower gears cause the engine to rev higher, fuel economy and long-term engine life are negatively affected.
