Been on the lookout for specific options and colors on an F-350 using cars.com and decided to try out the search inventory feature on the Ford site. It’s missing a ton of trucks that are actually for sale at dealers and the ones it does have are no longer for sale. In today’s world, there is no excuse for that.
This whole ordeal has been the most frustrating search experience I’ve ever gone through. I’ve found 4 different trucks over the past two weeks and each one has sold the day before I was scheduled to go check it out.
I felt similarly and then found a solution. Use their online chat service during business hours. You can configure your truck using their builder tool, send a link to the chat person, and they will find all the trucks that match it within a specified radius.

Problem is that during their working hours I’m busy at work. Real time (+/- a day) inventory searches have been pretty good for about 20+ years without having to chat with someone during their working hours. It’s incredibly embarrassing that a company like ford can’t even match the accuracy of a do it yourself Etsy account.

I’m not making excuses for them. The chat service works as I was looking for a specific truck and found one truck configured the way I wanted it within 1,000 miles. Literally one truck. Which I bought.
I agree, the Ford inventory search is too limited. 100 mile radius and only a few filters. I haven't ran into the problem th OP has, every truck I looked into was in stock.
I wasnt aware that the chat people would do a wide search like described. my interaction with them has been pretty disappointing, usually they want to set me up with my local dealer (who has nothing I want).

So from what i have learned about this....not all ford dealers pay or participate in that feature. The dealer i buy from never ever comes up on an inventory search. Very small town dealer. as far as radius goes...you can trick the system by filtering it to what you like, then going up to your search bar and changing the 100 to 500 and hit enter. That is as far as it will allow.

I only see a drop down menu that goes up to a 100 mile radius. Where would I put the 500?

I found that you can change manually the distance in your web address to up to 500, but it doesnt seem to work any higher than that for some reason. That was helpful to me.
