My alternator died and had to be replaced about 3 months ago. Now occasionaly while I am in drive and stopped the volt needle will sweep from the "L" in Normal down to about the "R" and then back again. It only does it while I am in gear and stopped. It is not a constant thing; it only happens once in a while. It also only sweeps about every 4-5 seconds while stopped and then returns to normal. Does it sound like the stupid thing is going out AGAIN?? Not sure if this is related but for the last week or so when I leave for work in the morning my belts have been squeeling pretty badly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Short ,yea, check your positive cable going down to the Starter.
Squeel, yea, Thats your alternator trying to charge up the weak battery. Just a good guess...

When you turn the wheel at a stop the Power Steering pump has to work a little harder which puts a load on the engine that drops the idle RPM a tad bit. I guess a short is possible, but it sounds to me like either 1 your idle speed isn't high enough to keep the alternator spinning at a charge speed, or 2 the parts store sold you a bad alternator. I suggest taking it to a parts store and have them test the charging system.
