Hello everyone I have a 1995 F150 4x4 with a 351w and E40D tranny. I have been having problems out of it for awhile now and can't for the life of me figure it out. The truck doesn't want to shift from 1st to 2nd until about 20-25mph. It usually skips 3rd and goes straight to OD at about 35 to 40 mph. If you push the throttle down once its in OD to make it downshift its like it kicks into neutral or slips then revs up high and then slams into 3rd. Once you left off the throttle it goes right back into OD. The OD button doesn't work and i have inspected the wires in the column and they are fine. I replaced the button on the end of the shifter and still the same result. Also and I assume its related I can not pull any codes not even a pass code off the computer and the check engine doesn't come on even when you turn the shift on. The truck also has push button for 4wd and I dont know if its related or not but the low range light on the push button stays on even when not in 4wd. This problem started as only every once in awhile and has gotten progressively more consistent to the point where it rarely shifts right at all but it still does occasionally. Any help is much appreciated!
When you turn the key to "ON", does the CEL illuminate?
Have you tried cleaning the contacts of the DLC connector with a finger nail file?
If the CEL doesn't illuminate when the key is turned to "ON", then good chance the PCM is at fault. Make sure the bulb isn't blown.
At any rate, if you can't pull codes, I would already pull the PCM and check the board for damage, ie., blown, leaking, bulging capacitors, burnt traces, or water intrusion.
No it doesn't. I changed the bulb thinking that was the problem to but it didn't help. I am of the same mind as you timbersteel and was thinking it may be the PCM. That would explain a lot of the problems its having. I will pull the PCM and check it as soon as I get time and let you know what it looks like. If anyone else has any ideas for me to go on as well please share. Thank you timbersteel for the response!
Your T-case sensor might be bad.If the trans is getting a signal that your in 4lo when your really not,it's not going to shift correctly.
Ok I'll check it as well and the connectors to it, It might have been worth mentioning to begin with (I was half asleep and frustrated as all get out when I made the original post) that this problem started off as only happening in wet conditions (rain, wet roads, after washing the truck, etc.) And then slowly devolved over time to happening no matter the outside conditions.
