I have a 2018 Drw 4x4 and need to add a gooseneck. Why a dealer would order without one is beyond me. Anyway should i go to the dealer or get a aftermarket? Any advantages or disadvantages either way? I searched the forum i know i have seen threads in the past. Must not be using the correct key words.
It should come stock with every DRW in my opinion. If you get the OEM puck style the bed needs to come off for install, could do it yourself. Aftermarket bolts up to the top of the bed
Do a search on line for the OEM kit, then search that part number, should be able to pick it up for around $500.
going to you dealer and get a packaged price for parts and labor might get you a good price olso.
I put the kit on my 2011.
I did not totally remove the bed, just lifted enough to slide the hitch into place and access the bolts.
Yhe location for the holes are dimpled so drilling them in the right place is easy.
The hardest part on my install was removing the bed bolts. Had to weld nuts on them to get them out.
Your 18 should be much easier to remove, unless you have a spray in bedliner.
I was really impressed with the quality of the OEM kit. Very heavy and one half is cast steel, not fabricated.
My truck did nit come with the 5th wheel / gooseneck prep kit.
I was going to install a OEM however I could not find one when I needed one. I had just purchased a 5th wheel camper, and the factory puck hitch was on national back order at the time. I could not wait so I installed a B&W turnover ball gooseneck hitch.
Install took a full day however it turned out well, works great. I pull my 5er with an Anderson Ultimate attached to the goose ball. Its a great setup.
The OEM is a Reese, so even if you go aftermarket, you can still get the "OEM" hitch. I've now had both the B&W and the Ford/Reese. I'm liking the Ford/Reese more.
But that's not to say I *didn't* like the B&W. The only annoying thing for me with the B&W was the pull rod in the wheel well. I'd pull it, think I had it locked open, hop in the bed and hear it slam closed. hop out of the bed, rinse & repeat. It was normally a case of either dirt/rust building up on the spring and not letting me actually pull it all the way back. Part of the fun in living in NY winters, with half my road being dirt.
The Ford/Reese one is nice being all above the bed. And I like that it has the plastic plugs for the holes when not in use.
