Truck runs like a bat out of you-know-where when it's good and hot, at least until I ran it out of fuel at the same time I found out the gauge isn't accurate, and now it feels weak even when hot though the miss goes away. On cold starts, it hitches and misses like crazy when under load, such as in overdrive. Enough to shake your teeth out. 5 miles down the road and the miss smooths out. Also seems to drink fuel like no tomorrow. A quarter tank lasted maybe 50 miles? Has a pretty significant knock at idle that is either an injector or it's about to punch a rod through the block. I give it a 50/50 shot on either option given my luck.
No codes or SES light. Buzz test passes fine. CCT gives incredibly inconsistent results to the point that I'm not sure Torque Pro is doing its job right. No smoke unless you're really on it, though that suggests that it's getting enough fuel even when missing. Starts fine most of the time, except when it doesn't. I thought I could tell a difference when unplugging the ICP sensor so that was replaced. No dice.
My theory is this: AD injectors that came with the motor are on the way out, at least some are. 113K on them, motor out of a schoolbus so government fleet maintained, but things happen. When the oil gets hot enough to thin out the bad ones kick in and do their job, until then it hitches. Running it out of fuel killed the one (or more) that was on the way out, explaining the current lack of power, though not the fact that it still smooths out when hot even if it has no *****. Also not sure why it would blow black fuel smoke if it was a fuel starvation issue.
When it gets back from the shop that is doing a bad job of diagnosing at great job prices, I'll pull the valve covers and look for oil spit. Until then, what other ideas come to mind?
Thanks as always homies.
