I have a 1992 F-250 Ext cab 4X4 with a 460 V-8 that has a power steering problem. My pump started to whine about a month ago so I figured it was goiing out anytime soon but to days ago it started doing something funny. It works fine when I turn to the left but when I turn to the right it acts like I have manual steering. I can turn it real easy to the left but I need both hands and a lot of force to turn right. I thought the pump went so I replaced it yesterday but that did not solve it. I flushed the steering fluid and bled the lines but she still won't turn easy to the right. Does anyone know what this problem could be? I'm not looking forward to taking it in to a dealership to have them diagnose it and would rather fix it my self. I need to know what I should start looking for, I think it could be an O-ring or a Valve in the steering box but not sure, any insight? If you have any suggestions email me back at cj-5@qwest.net
Greetings,
My guess would be something (Like dirt) has got into the control valve assembly (The part of the box that the steering wheel shaft goes into). Go to the parts house and grab a master rebuild kit for your box, its really not too hard to rebuild them, heck if I did it anyone can. If you read the similar post called 'Help! Power Steering Issues' you can see an easy way to remove the sector shaft seal. Just be sure to have a pan to catch all the fluid. When I finished the rebuild I put a filter in the return line. It;s CarQuest part#2210 made by Atsco. I also switched from power steering fluid to ATF and have noticed smoother performance.
Good Luck.
