you know, it felt like a wheel had loose lug nuts. So the whole front end shakes, along with steering wheel. Sorta feels like really bad warped rotors, or loose wheel.
Just saw your mileage so it looks like your on your own. Climb under the truck with the engine off, and get your ol’ lady to rock the steering wheel back and forth at a steady pace. Put your hands on every steering and suspension joint. Look and feel for play or popping in the joints. Jack the front end of the truck and use a pry bar (or any sort of leverage tool) under the front tires. Get a buddy to pry up and down while you look closely at your ball joints for any up and down play. While the front end is jacked up grab the front wheels and wiggle them back and forth at both 12 and 6 oclock, and then at 3 and 9. It should feel tight as you wiggle the wheels. No popping or chatter.

I lifted the front and got under it. Everything seems nice and tight. The stabilizer swooshes like it has pressure. The tires do not knock when I wiggle at the 3&9 or 12&6 positions.
I did not try up and down with a pry bar under the tires. I’ll try that next.
The popping seems to come from the steering gear. Is there a way to adjust it?
When you say the knocking is coming from the steering box, what did you do to initiate the knock? Are you hearing the knock at the pitman arm coming out of the steering box? Yes there is an adjustment on the box itself, but you have to be very careful when you adjust it. If you over tighten you can bind the gears in the box which can create a whole other slew of issues. Fords procedure for lash measurment involves pulling the steering box and measuring resistance with a beam style torque wrench that measures in inch lbs. Some guys adjust the tensioner a little at a time with the box still mounted in the truck, cutting the wheel back and forth with the front tires off of the ground, while feeling for binding in the steering wheel. However, that is not the best way to do it. Dont start tightening the adjuster just yet. Lets focus on where the knock is coming from in relation to the steering box. When driving without the load on the back, are you feeling any kind of rattle or metallic feedback through the steering wheel when hitting irregularities in the road?

i initiated the **** by turning the steering wheel back and forth vigorously. From the steering linkage on averyrhing seems solid. There is play on the steering wheel when tires are on the ground.
