It is a dual wheel with a 12ft stake bed and is underpowered for hauling purposes. I would like to convert it over to an 8 cyl. for more power. What vehicle should I look for as a donor vehicle, and what years? When I do the conversion, do I have to find one with a auto trans? Is it possible to convert to a standard trans?

You will need to find a F-250HD or F-350 with a 351 or 460 engine. You will also want an '87-'96 engine because they are fuel injected. You don't have to find an engine that had an auto tranny. Also you can convert to a manual but it takes some work because you have to add several parts.

How did you end up with a straight 6 in a dually ton truck? Anyway, swapping in a manual ain't too rough. You may have to make some custom cuts in your truck, and do a little jerry riggin, but you should be OK. You may have to change drive shafts. With some trannies, you'll have to find a 2-piece shaft (assuming you don't already have one.) Whatever you do, make sure you have the right flywheel/flexplate, otherwise you may inadvertantly ruin a good tranny. I'm surprised deere didn't mention that one.

Thank you fellas for you input. Now here is another question for you. If I was to put a 460 in that truck with my auto tranny would it bolt right up to my auto or would I need a different one?
