I have a 1990 F-250HD 4x4 with 351W and 3.55gears 5sp ZF
original EVERYTHING
the performance is not there at all!
and am considering changing the gears,
I have put everything new on this engine and the only thing
left is the EGR valve is registering as bad, check engine light on.
But back to the gears I am going to put in 4.56 gears because in the winter I run 34" tires for the muddy terrain.
But at other times I don't do much highway driving at all
and when I do it is just towing at around 60 mph.
will this gear change make much difference at all and if it will a notciable difference??
If you change axle gears , remember , you have to change both the front & rear to match otherwise you will have some serious problems operating in 4WD.
Should make a big difference as far as towing ability and off the line performance.
However, keep in mind that gas mileage will probably go down, a lot. Engine wear may go up due to higher RPM. It may be a bit buzzy on the freeway, ie the engine will turn a noticably higher RPM at speed, which make make some noise and or resonance.
The bigger tires will help offset some of these problems.
Things to consider...
I am not sure if you will require a different reluctor for the ABS system(Not sure if you have ABS since I forgot to check your post). A different reluctor may not be available for that gear.
Your computer may need to be recalibrated as well as the speedo/odo.
Like the other guy said you need two sets of gears.
You will probably wear out tires quicker, better acceleration is evil ;^)
All depends on what you want to do and what you are willing to put up with.
I too have a '90 F-250HD 4x, but with a 460FI engine and a E4OD trans. It originally came with 3:55 gears, and with the 30" tall tires, it worked so-so. After I installed a Skyjacker 4" suspension kit, Detroit Locker, 35" BFG's, and a some other mods, the 4:10 gears I installed seem to work just fine. At 65MPH the rpm's are at about 2800... 4:56 gears might have been a better choice for a little more grunt off the line, but I want the engine to last as long as possible and, at 10MPG, I didn't want the mileage to suffer. Good Luck
By the way... What front axle do you have? Mine has the Dana 44HD.
I have the Dana50 HD front axle/
also you mean 1800rpm at 65 right??
I have 3.55's and 31's and at 65 I am pulling just 1900rpm
the e40d is an overdrive. i have the 5sp manual ZF HD
