I hope someone can help me. I own a 1986 Bronco. Yesterday, I blew out the rear differential. The casing actually cracked. I need to replace it, but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any information they can give me? Also:
How do I find out what gear ratio I have in my differentials?
I had to get to work an hour early today because my girl drove me. Please help. Thanks.
There should be a tag on the rear dif that shows what your ratio is. if not there go to the door jam and there should be a sticker with some numbers.
i would look at the junkyards first for a rear end. it would be alot cheaper then trying to rebuild yours. Have you pulled the cover off to see what happend, maybe you just hit something on the cover and thats what caused the crack?
Like Kemicalburns said, the tag should give you the ratio I don't recall but its possible you still have the Ford 9" rear in your truck. If so, and you managed to crack the casing, DAMN! Ford 9's are pretty stout housings. Even the 8.8" Ford isn't exactly a slouch. The 8.8 will have an inspection cover on the back. The 9" will not.
