I found a box that appears to be from an old car alarm... It appears to be plugged into the factory wiring by the battery/starter soliniod.. Its pretty tough to tell where the wires go with seriously cutting into the harness to trace the wires... any thoughts on if I can unplug it and toss it???
That is your voltage regulator for your alternator, remove it and your alternator will cease to function! However you can upgrade to an internally regulated alternator and there are several articles on how to do it and what alternator to use on this site.
Looks aftermarket, i'd guess someone had charging system issues in the past. Definitely worth looking into a 3G upgrade. The old style alternators are a fire hazard.
