No start. Just pop

68 f250 390....first start after rebuilding carb and timing gear/chain water pump etc etc. leaks are front part of carb. 4 screws go into. I forgot the name. I do know one screw is broke off in the carb from po. More than likely why its leaking haha.

I dont know carbs at all. Just stating..I read somewhere about turning the adjustment screws clockwise and backing off 1 turn and half. So I did for both screws.. I'm extremely certain is was all at tdc when I put Timing gears together line up dots etc etc.....I do seem to have a issue with the throttle going straight to floor. And not coming back up properly. I did notice open areas on the throttle linkage to carb that seems to be missing things. Does anyone have a pic or throttle linkage? From carb. I did notice behind the carb there is another set of linkages too..any pics could please so I can eyeball what I'm missing...

last question when the throttle is at idle....should the front of the carb with the 4 screws be pushed all the in or pulled out? Mine seems to be all the way in when peddle is at idle position.

So I tried to start her anyway. All she did was pop..I stopped. Tried again...big pop so I stopped..but while cranking before the pops I didnt hear any unusual noises from engine which is a good sign. Because the oil pan was full of water when I got her. Left the hood off for some time..

Yes the accel pump. That's the name. Now I need pics of throttle linkage because I have a feeling something is missing. Hard putting something together that someone else destroyed

Oh dear. Not going to be easy haha.

Any thoughts on the back fire should the accel pump be pulled in or out when at idle.

The part with the arrow is called the "dashpot". It slows the return of the carb linkage down, just a little, so that the carb doesn't suddenly stop getting gas, (and the engine die).

The accel pump arm should be out from the pump (and carb) while at idle speed. The pump is used when you start to accelerate, so the engine doesn't starve for gas, and the engine backfire, and "stumble".

You can also see that I'm missing the "dashpot" too.

That's what I need to see. Where does that big spring go to? I noticed my accel pump was all the way in while trying to start truck. Probably why it backfired.

So the accel pump being all the way in while starting..would that be the cause of the backfire? Or setting of the mixture screws?
