hey guys, gettin ready to do the tune up on my new bronco. 90' eb 302. i was thinking bout replacing the stock fuel filter with one of those inline ones.....or running both at the same time, thats what i did on my cj-7. ran the stock filter and an inline one, but i didnt know if that would cause any problems with the fuel injection as compared to the carbed cj-7. im getting a new intake system, dont like the old stock system at all. what about plugs and wires, any hint as what to use for that? anything else i should do while i got the tools out, once aghain, im new to the ford 302, i believe the inline six i had in the jeep cj-7 was a ford and was very pleased with that. my dad has a f-150 with 249,000 miles on the stock motor, i want to keep this motor reliable like that. thanks all
The stock fuel filter IS inline. Sits inside the driver's side frame rail. I agree, wouldn't double up on them you could end up with pressure problems. Speaking of pressure problems, make sure you depressurize the system before you try to replace the filter.
As for replacement parts...Motorcraft (Ford) Autolite, Champion.
BTW the I-6 in your CJ-7 was actually an American motors design dating originally back to *****'s (which could mean there is some Ford heritage there too). The AMC 242 cid was later rebored and given beefier main bearings (as if you needed them) and displacement was increased to 258. Since the Jeep name saw ownership by so many different manufacturers (includig a short stint with GM) the engine family never really got messed with except to improve and modify for newer technologies and emissions restrictions. You learn a lot when you make the mistake of buying a Cherokee.
Ford did run dual in-line filtration in some EFI trucks. My '88 Ranger had a pre-filter before the frame-mounted fuel pump in addition to the filter on the pressure side. If your '90 Bronco has the pump in the tank, that is not an option.
Ford Motorsport has excellent Cap, rotor and plug wire sets that are an upgrade from stock and still fit perfectly because they are Ford parts. IMO, stay away from Splitfire, +2, +4 and other overpriced aftermarket spark plugs with this engine. Stock or single platiunum are fine. You are buying eight of them, so a $6 plug vs $2 a plug really adds up.
