water temperature guage
hey i have a 1989 ford f-150 with the 4.9 inline 6, i have a question. my truck can be sitting for 2 days and then right when i crandk it up the temp guage sky rockets and the check engine light comes on. is it a faulty guage. it sky rockets right when the ignition is turned on. please help just wondering.

Real quick way to check the gauge vs. the sender.
Disconnect the wire from the sending unit.
Turn Ignition on.
1.) If the gauge stays low proceed to 2. If it still goes high, you got a bad gauge/resistor on the dash panel....go to 3.
2.) ground the wire...the needle should go all the way up past HOT!! If so replace the sending unit. $7.00 at Advance Autoparts.
3.) Troubleshoot the dash panel using the wiring diagram in your chiltons/haynes manual. If your not comfortable doing this, get an aftermarket mechanical gauge and mount it in/on/under dash.
(about $20-$25 and 1-2 hrs).
