1996 E350 Vs F350?

I cant seem to find enough information on this subject so thought I'd post up asking about the E350 vans compared to the trucks. This weekend I will be looking at a 96 E350 with 122k miles on it that has a started 4wd conversion for $10k. Before driving 6 hours for it I'd like to get as much insight as possible from the people who know these vans.

From a high level standpoint, are their any major drive train differences between the OBS trucks and these vans?
Is there any opinions on how this will tow? This thing has 4.10 axles from an 06 truck, auto, 34" tires. Id be pulling ~7k lbs.

Any incite helps, thanks!

helps, thanks!

The engine bay is pretty cramped on the vans, with the 7.3 stuffed in there. But the stuff on the back of the engine is pretty easy to access with the doghouse removed. It should handle the weight of the trailer fine, I would think. 7k is not very heavy. I’d be most concerned about the suspension conversion, if it was done right. (Not that I would be able to know whether it was right or not, haha)

Are these motors and the supporting components the same as the trucks?

Not enough room. The vans had a slightly bigger turbo to help with egt’s

Well,
I picked it up this Friday and drove it all the way back to Denver (~6hrs) with zero issues. Seemed to have good power with 4.10's and 35" tires. Very excited for the rest of the 4x4 build.
Axles have already been swapped in, just need to do the tranny/transfer case side of the project.
From what Ive learned so far, it needs a new Xmember, 4x4 tranny or new tranny tail housing, transfer case, adapter between the tranny/ transfer case and ...?
I'm still trying to figure out the VSS, I believe that is in the transfercase/transmission adapter on vans, unsure yet

You've probably seen this but it's a good place for this link.

4x4 Van Conversion kits

I have one of these and always thought it would be a cool 4x4 rolling hotel room. I'll never do it but it would be cool.

Them and a handful of others, actually have a few here local to CO.
First order of business is to modify the gas tank to fit the transfer case, the $400 option is to take the stock tank in to get cut shorter giving you just under 30 gallons, the $900 option is an after market tank meant for the 4x4 conversion that gives you 40 gallons. I believe Ill do the 40 gallon option as expensive as it is. I think Id regret not have the larger capacity with towing, multiple day trips and cabin heater pulling from the diesel as well.

I don't know why, but I have always wanted one of those vans with the 7.3 in it. I just think there is something oddly satisfying and totally bada$$ about them.

I wish I would have seen this earlier! I’m down east of Parker and have everything you needed outside the trans tail housing. I have a spare van motor as well with a windowed block if you ever need parts. Heads were just done...

i have always loved loved the conversion vans. They are not hard to do but good god are expensive to buy if done by others.

I think I have just about everything I need to finish the 4x4 conversion. I'd take a look at any interior parts if you got them.
