So a year after I take my truck in complaining of my block heater tripping my GFI all the time, to which they claimed they found nothing wrong, I get the recall notice on my truck. Also, the notice was over a month after I called inquiring about the announced recall while my truck was in for a re-repair, which I had to re-re-fix when I got it home. I’m tired of losing down time in the service department.
I know, I know, they are fixing it for free. And I get a loaner prius-like car. My glass should be half full. Well it is, but it’s cracked...and it’s half full of ****.
Block heaters from all makes, models and years are known for tripping gfi outlets. Don't feel like the lone ranger on that. My 02 7.3 used to do it all the time
Just asking... At what temperature is a block heater absolutely necessary? I have cold soaked the truck into the negatives degrees Fahrenheit and it never cared. Remote start and fires right up. I have had diesels (3 duramax & 1 ps) for over 12 years now and have never plugged them in without any non-starts in upstate NY.
I'm not at all surprised by your less than stellar service. The dealer that sold me my truck refused to even look at my doors when I was having issues with the driver's door not closing properly when it was near freezing outside. I went in twice about the issue and they wouldn't even discuss it. They just kept saying the door freezing recall was only on the F150s. I told them I didn't care what the recall was or wasn't on, but I was having issues with the door closing properly. They wouldn't even make an appointment to look at it. The dealer I'm using now checked it out and found a faulty latch and a binding cable. Had it back and working properly in a day.
I've never had a service department really meet my expectations. This goes for other brands too. Chevy, GMC, Caddy, Honda. They all suck. The Ford place I've been going to recently is pretty good. They troubleshoot and repair in good time and fix things right the first time, but they also climbed all over my bumper when doing maintenance and scratched the heck out of the painted bumper. And they sprayed diesel all over the engine bay when they changed the filters. They ended up detailing the truck, but only after I pointed out how strong the diesel smell was in the cab.

I think the current literature states about -20 or so. But I will tell you, I never once plugged in my diesel so that it would start. I plugged it in so that I would have heat MUCH sooner than without. YMMV.

yeah, they dented my tailgate and had to send to body shop on the same visit. And truck went back 3 times just to get the fix done. In the end, I ended up seating the roof dust boot myself because it was not done properly. I do like the dealership on the sales side and the service manager was always polite and accommodating, but they seemed to lack a degree of attention to detail in the actual work.
I've been using block heaters for 35+ years on my vehicles. Most engines (especially diesels) run better, cleaner, more economically, and longer, the faster they get to their designed operating temperature. My diesels last for a yet to be determined amount of time and mileage (never have had an engine failure), and I get superior fuel mileage by comparison to those that don't use the same protocol. As a result, while intrigued by the new Ford Ranger (ready to down size from a Super Duty), I'm disappointed that there is no diesel offered.
I felt like the block heater recall was just a way to get me to stop by the dealer...was a total waste of time. Didn't have a problem before and still don't have a problem now.
I thought I read somewhere there was one instance of a fire related to the block heater cord. I know it seems like a waste of time, agreed, but better safe than sorry. It took 10-15 minutes for my dealer to check it out.
If you move to Arizona you wont need the block heater. Just sayin...
This is our first time in Arizona for the winter and I'm still waiting for this warm Arizona weather I kept hearing about. I keep up the charade when I call relatives up north cuz I like to hear them groan and sigh! But I haven't had to use my block heater.
