Should I try the block heater, I do not think it has ever been used, it still had factory tape on it Safe or not safe
Vehicle info
I have 95 E 350 7.3 93 k
I live CA
To get it to start in the morning I have to cycle the glow plugs couple of times [ white smoke on starting ]
It will fire right away sometimes other times it takes so cranking
Batteries are new
Recent work The whole fuel filter housing was replaced and fuel pump
Runs great after it starts
I see no harm in trying it. Two to four seconds after plugging it in you should hear a low mild noise if you stick your ear down there in front of the tire.
;The block heater should be good to use, as long as there are no cracks or chew marks from little critters, in the insolation covering the wires. It sounds to me like you have a problem in the glow plug circuit, either the relay or some bad plugs.
Thanks for the input , I tried the block heater this morning for a hour fired right up Can you actually hear anything ehew it's plugged in
Very faintly. Next time when it is cold, plug it in and roll under truck by oil filter housing. It sounds somewhat like a pot on the verge of boiling I guess is how I would describe it. If you do not have good hearing, not saying you do, it would be easy to miss. Seems the factory element is 1000W (I have heard maybe 600?), so after about four hours is all you can get heat-wise. It will be very tepid heat, but beats none. I have seen a 1500W element, but unsure who makes it.
Zerostart is a brand I installed in my '85 300SD MB, been in there for years...like 10? I trust that brand.
Think stock heater is about 1000 watts which means it will draw about 8 amps, that's a lot. Plugging it in I've never heard anything but on cold mornings, really didn't want to crawl under the truck to listen. You will usually get a little spark plugging at the power cord and unplugging though. Over the years I've tried different plugged in times and seems about 3 hours max does the job for me here in southern Oregon on cold mornings. Seldom used the block heater unless temps were expected to below 32 overnight. It just made starting easier and faster cab heat.
55 and above mine will just start when twisting the key but the colder it gets the rougher the start
32 this week end and it fired up right after WTS went out
about a week ago it was 5 out and I had to use the block heater to get running and after 20 minutes of warming it up, it ran on half cylinders until passengers side warmed up
Look at volts when turning key, if its at about 12 volts, your GPs are not being energized. mine will drop to around 10 on the gauge
THANKS TO ALL THAT REPLY
When the GPR goes bad what could cause this
When I start my other 7.3's Trucks I hear a click when it its ready
I do not hear anything in the 7.3 VAN
I put new batteries in it But the old ones were low at 11.9 and 11.2 I
it would start but slowly
Could this caused the GPR to go bad
