Ok all you FTE(rs) who has the best aftermarket Gooseneck/5er hitch viewing camera set up?
Between the extra depth of the bed and seats and who knows what else I cant see the hitch which makes lining up the coupler more difficult than it needs to be...
Lots of wireless cameras with displays on the market but always easier (cheaper) to find those that actually work out there in FTEland.
Pics and video are always a plus!!!
I used the camera in the link below when I had a 5th wheel camper. Magnetic base on the camera, I'd set it right on the 5th wheel until the pin was almost in, then remove it and complete the hookup.
The monitor has a flexible gooseneck that plugs right into your 12V accessory plug. I think there's also a version that will stream to your phone if you don't want the monitor.
I don't use mine much since I bought the 2017 with backup camera and I no longer own a 5th wheel, but it's in the rear door storage just in case I ever need it.
With the 360 camera package, I haven't needed an extra camera, but back in my 1/2 ton, before I got my aftermarket headunit installed with backup camera in the tailgate, I used to use my iPhone and iPad for hooking up the TT. I would just turn on the hotspot on the iPhone, connect the iPad to it, then facetime between them. I had a spot on the tongue of the trailer, jammed up against the propane tanks, where I could prop the iPad and it's camera would be facing the coupler. Put the phone on the dash and carefully back up. It took some getting used to because the view wasn't a typical backup camera type view. It wasn't perfect, but it was stuff I had on hand.
I have the tailgate mounted camera but it looks at the ground when hooking up... Thought about putting a guide line on the ground and a stop line. ------I that should work for both alignment and distance... but not clearance
Not to sound like a smart butt here, but do you guys not just open the rear slide window, turn around and look? I do that on both my Ext cab and Crew cab, no issues. I have the high mount camera in the brake light, but turning around is just so much easier.
I have a folding tonneau and it blocks the view of my high mount camera. I can see the GN hitch coming over the tailgate and follow it up a line in the truck bed. But I loose it before I can tell if it is centered over the ball. It's a shame, because that is one of the main reason I bought a 2017 truck with the 360° camera system. Since I hook up a trailer several times a week. But it's my fault for adding the cover
For me hooking up my GN horse trailer, I have painted a "L" on the ground that brackets my drivers rear tire. I leave a 2x4 block on that paint. As I back up, I put the tire in the bracket and roll back until I hit the 2x4 and I''m centered under the ball. No hopping in and out of the truck to check on the position. I can glance at the 2x4 vs paint and make sure it has not been moved
In my older trucks ( before Ford extended the Crew Cab and before folding Tonneaus) I could look out the back window and watch the ball for alignment.
I know that you asked about a camera, but this is the redneck version I use with my '99 F250 (my '19 F350 has the bed camera). I have a scrap piece of 6x6 about a foot long with a hole drilled about an inch from one of the long ends of block. I stick scrap piece of pvc pipe about 3ft long in the hole and place block next to the goose neck ball where the lip of the coupler tilts the pvc towards the cab when its centered over the ball. I hook my chains, pull the pvc (stick it under the rear seat), and leave the block in the bed (it does occasionally double duty as a leveling block for the legs of my RV.

Did just that for 15 years with the 03 F350DRW problem is the bed on the '18 CCLB is 1.5 inches deeper so there is a different viewing angle and I swear the rear seats are "taller" as well.
There are other factors that play into the need (limited range of motion injury) so I would if I could but I cant so I don't; just cant see it...
Check this out. I haven't done it yet, because I've been working full time on coach mods.... but this is coming for me.
In fact, I want to do both the gooseneck pinbox and the camera. But until I do the pinbox I was thinking about putting the camera on the horse shoe until I'm ready to couple.
I have the 360 system and added a plug and play camera from this outfit https://camera-source.com/automotive...Duty&year=2017
It wasn't cheap ($199) but works using my existing screen. I mounted it under the bed rail inline with my gooseneck ball. It makes hitching up fool proof.
